Future heat vulnerability in California, Part II: projecting future heat-related mortality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Through the 21 century, a significant increase in heat events is likely across California (USA). Beyond any climate change, the state will become more vulnerable through demographic changes resulting in a rapidly aging population. To assess these impacts, future heat-related mortality estimates are derived for nine metropolitan areas in the state for the remainder of the century. Heat-related mortality is first assessed by initially determining historical weather-type mortality relationships for each metropolitan area. These are then projected into the future based on predicted weather types created in Part I. Estimates account for several levels of uncertainty: for each metropolitan area, mortality values are produced for five different climate model-scenarios, three different population projections (along with a constant-population model), and with and without partial acclimatization. Major urban centers could have a greater than tenfold increase in short-term increases in heat-related mortality in the over 65 age group by the 2090s.

Projecting Future Heat-Related Mortality under Climate Change Scenarios: A Systematic Review
BACKGROUND Heat-related mortality is a matter of great public health concern, especially in the light of climate change. Although many studies have found associations between high temperatures and mortality, more research is needed to project the future impacts of climate change on heat-related mortality. OBJECTIVES We conducted a systematic review of research and methods for projecting futur...
متن کاملFuture population exposure to US heat extremes
Extreme heat events are likely to become more frequent in the coming decades owing to climate change1,2. Exposure to extreme heat depends not only on changing climate, but also on changes in the size and spatial distribution of the human population. Here we provide a new projection of population exposure to extremeheat for the continentalUnited States that takes into account both of these facto...
متن کاملSpatial analysis of the effect of the 2010 heat wave on stroke mortality in Nanjing, China
To examine the spatial variation of stroke mortality risk during heat wave, we collected 418 stroke mortality cases with permanent addresses for a severe heat wave (July 28-August 15, 2010) and 624 cases for the reference period (July 29-August 16, 2009 and July 27-August 14, 2011) in Nanjing, China. Generalized additive models were used to explore the association between location and stroke mo...
متن کاملPresentation of an Operational Program to Reduce vulnerability of outdoor workers to to heat stress and climate change
Background: Outdoor workers are vulnerable to heat stress and climate change due to their occupational and environmental conditions. Short-term exposure to extreme heat (acute exposure) can lead to rise the core body temperature, which it may directly cause heat related illnesses such as mild rash, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is reported that long-term chronic exposure to heat l...
متن کاملVulnerability Reduction Needed to Maintain Current Burdens of Heat-Related Mortality in a Changing Climate—Magnitude and Determinants
The health burden from heatwaves is expected to increase with rising global mean temperatures and more extreme heat events over the coming decades. Health-related effects from extreme heat are more common in elderly populations. The population of Europe is rapidly aging, which will increase the health effects of future temperatures. In this study, we estimate the magnitude of adaptation needed ...
